What is the Dawson sheet pile capping system?

A capping beam is a concrete beam on top of a sheet pile wall. It masks the inevitable irregularities in pile length and line, distributes the load and often serves as a base for a railing or safety barrier. The Dawson capping system makes casting simple: Redeb support brackets clamp onto the sheet piles and carry the soffit formwork.

The soffit panels consist of rectangular bars sliding freely within a frame. You push them against the pile wall, so the soffit adapts perfectly to the shape of the sheet piles, including driving distortions. No scaffolding, welding or drilled anchors are needed. Dawson cites a 275 metre cap completed in four weeks, more than two weeks faster than with traditional formwork.

Who is the Dawson capping system for?

The capping system is made for marine contractors, sheet piling contractors and builders of quay walls, bridge abutments and bank protection, and for sites where working safely from ground level matters.

Technical specifications of the Dawson capping system

The key data of the Dawson capping system, according to Dawson:

  • Redeb brackets: RSB500 and RSB600 for U and Z sheet piles, RSB700 for 700 and 750 mm U-type piles
  • Safe working load per bracket: 2000 kg (U-pile interlocks) or 1500 kg (inclined webs)
  • Soffit panel 2.5 m: 360 kg
  • Soffit panel 3.0 m: 430 kg, required for 750 mm piles
  • Suitable for all known sheet piles and also for secant pile walls

What do these specifications mean?

The safe working load of a Redeb bracket is a point load on the arms, 310 mm from the centre of the hard points: 2000 kg on the interlocks of U-type sheet piles, 1500 kg on inclined webs of U or Z-type sheet piles. The panels normally span one pair of piles between two brackets without extra support.
