Horseshoe box – SBH drag box – pull under crossing pipes

The horseshoe box is a drag box whose top box has no front spacer. This means it hinders the excavator less, and after removing the top box you pull the base box under crossing pipes.

What is the SBH horseshoe box?

The horseshoe box is a version of the SBH drag box, made for long pipeline routes in open terrain. As with a standard drag box, you pull it through the excavated trench to the next position while backfilling behind the box. The difference is in the top box: it has no front spacer, so from above it has the shape of a horseshoe and hinders the excavator less while digging.

When you meet a crossing pipe, you quickly remove the top box and pull the base box under the pipe. The rear spacer has extra lifting rings, so a second excavator at the back can easily take over the box. The box goes up to 3 metres deep, and up to 4.5 metres with the top box.

Who is the horseshoe box for?

The horseshoe box is intended for contractors who work with a drag box but come across crossing pipes on their route. It requires the same conditions as a drag box: open terrain, dry and temporarily stable soil, away from buildings and roads, and where some settlement is acceptable.

Technical specifications of the horseshoe box

The key data of the horseshoe box, according to SBH:

  • Installation depth: up to 3.00 m, with top box up to 4.50 m
  • Top box: without front spacer, removable
  • Extra lifting rings on the rear spacer
  • Working width: 0.90 to 7.00 m, depending on version
  • Excavator: crawler excavator from 25 t

What do these specifications mean?

The installation depth is the maximum trench depth the system protects safely. The working width is the clear space between the plates, the trench width the total width from outside to outside. The clearance under the strut or spindle (hc) determines how large the pipes are that you can slide underneath. The recommended excavator tells you which machine can install and pull the system.

Benefits of the horseshoe box

The horseshoe box at a glance:

  • Under crossing pipes: remove the top box, pull the base box under the pipe.
  • Less hindrance while digging: no front spacer in the top box.
  • Easy hand-over: extra lifting rings at the back.
  • Fast progress: pulled forward like a drag box.
  • Deeper with top box: up to 4.50 m.

How much does a drag box cost?

We do not publish prices online. Every request is handled personally, because the configuration, options and delivery differ from project to project. This way you receive a quotation that truly fits your work, for purchase or for rental.

What determines the price?

The price of a horseshoe box depends on the plate length and height, the struts or spindles and extension pieces, any top elements and transport to the site. For rental, the duration of your project also plays a role. We put the system together based on your trench depth and width.
